2018 Ed Symposium

Event Strategy and Design

The Project

Leaders across the country are continuing to find new ways to improve postsecondary access and success, particularly for students from underserved communities. Aspire Public Schools—one of the first charter school management organizations in the nation—sought to convene a community of partners, experts, supporters, and alumni to explore critical questions and spark new approaches to accelerating true college readiness — a core element of their longstanding mission.

The Strategy

Matterlab partnered with Aspire Public Schools to conceptualize, create, and launch their inaugural Ed Symposium. We worked with the Aspire team to develop the overall event strategy and success measures in alignment to organizational goals and crafted a central theme of “Pathways to Success.” We identified expert panelists, created the event communications strategy, coached all event participants, designed the full suite of event materials (including invitations, programs, presentation slides, signage, and email marketing templates), and produced a variety of videos (30-second, 60-second, and 3-minute highlights, and a documentary cut) for post-event promotion and continuation of the important conversation started that day.

The Results

Aspire’s first Ed Symposium succeeded across all measures identified—from filling the room with the right audience members to building brand awareness of Aspire among key individuals present. The event attracted multiple expert panelists from top organizations nationwide and effectively catalyzed critical, student-centered conversations at each small group table. Post-event survey results showed widespread interest in attending a similar convening on an annual basis and a commitment from participants to take ideas from the symposium back to their own schools and organizations for exploration and implementation.  Aspire’s second annual Ed Symposium will take place in spring 2019.
